Digital Desk: On 3rd November a horrifying case of sexual harassment has emerged from a private educational institute in Guwahati. A female medical student pursuing a Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT) course at the Asian Institute of Paramedical Sciences in Kahilipara has accused a teacher of sexually harassing her during a practical session.

The accused, identified as Abdul Karim, allegedly touched the student inappropriately during class. The victim, who is a student of the Adivasi Welfare Council, immediately reported it to the police, and the teacher was  detained by the Bhagadatta Police on Monday.

Shockingly, sources revealed that similar complaints had been made earlier against the same teacher, raising serious questions about the institution’s administration and internal policies. Reports suggest that unethical practices have been prevalent within the institute for a long time. There have been claims of teachers giving obscene gifts to the students and forcefully taking them into immoral acts in exchange for leaked examination papers.

The institute operates under the Tribal Development Council and receives crores of rupees from both the Central and State Governments for the education of its students. However, students have long expressed dissatisfaction with administrative negligence and mismanagement.

On Tuesday, a high-level meeting was convened at the institute, attended by administrative officials, to assess the situation . Some students complained that they did not want to stay behind in the institute and wished to be transferred to the institutes that had high academic standards.

He further informed that a meeting will be held on 5th November  at 11 a.m. at the Council’s head office in Lokhra to address all student grievances and ensure measures for their academic welfare.
