Digital Desk: The Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 10 paid tribute to the martyrs of the Assam Movement on the occasion of Swahid Diwas, honouring their sacrifices and reaffirming the Union Government’s dedication to fulfilling their aspirations for the state. In a message shared on social media, the Prime Minister wrote, “Today, on Swahid Diwas, we recall the valour of all those who were a part of the Assam Movement. The movement will always hold a significant place in our history. We reiterate our commitment to fulfilling the dreams of those who participated in the Assam Movement, particularly the strengthening of Assam’s culture and the all-round progress of the state.”

Responding to the Prime Minister’s remarks, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma endorsed the sentiments, emphasising that the sacrifices made by the martyrs continue to guide the state’s development journey. “Rightly said, Adarniya Shri Narendra Modi Ji! The legacy of the Bir Swahids of the Assam Movement continues to be our guiding beacon. With your guidance, we remain committed to ensuring the holistic development of Assam, just as they had envisioned,” Sarma stated.

Reflecting on the tragic chapter in Assam’s history, the Chief Minister pointed out that 860 youths and citizens lost their lives due to the actions of the then-government. He said, “All we know is that at that time Congress was in power, and during that period 860 young people were killed merely for demanding a safe Assam, for protesting against illegal infiltration, and for asking for their rightful place in their own land.”

Sarma reiterated that the sacrifices of these martyrs continue to inspire Assam’s pursuit of peace, progress, and cultural preservation, aligning closely with the vision upheld by the state and central leadership.
