We will defeat the BJP. The country is seeing how the Delhi Police is treating an elected MP
Digital Desk: Today, several Trinamool Congress (TMC) MPs were detained in Delhi for protesting outside Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s office against the Enforcement Directorate’s (ED) raid on the I-PAC office in Kolkata. The MPs, including Derek O’Brien, Satabdi Roy, Mahua Moitra, and Kirti Azad, alleged that the central government was misusing investigative agencies for political purposes.
During the protest, Delhi police reportedly lifted and dragged several MPs, including Derek O’Brien and Mahua Moitra, into police vans. O’Brien said, “You are seeing what is happening to the MPs here,” while Moitra added, “We will defeat the BJP. The country is seeing how the Delhi Police is treating an elected MP.”
Protesting the ED raids, Satabdi Roy claimed that the central agencies are used during elections to gain an advantage, stating, “They send teams of ED and CBI during elections just to win, but they won’t succeed.” Kirti Azad said the raids were conducted improperly and accused the BJP of attempting to influence elections undemocratically.
The controversy began after West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee allegedly intervened during the ED raid at I-PAC, a political consultancy firm linked to TMC, in connection with a coal smuggling case. Banerjee accused the central agency of seizing party-related materials, including hard disks, candidate lists, and strategic documents, and claimed that Amit Shah was misusing central agencies. She challenged the BJP to fight elections in West Bengal democratically.
The ED countered Banerjee’s allegations, stating that she had entered the residence of I-PAC director Prateek Jain and removed key evidence, including documents and electronic devices. The agency clarified that the searches were evidence-based, unrelated to any political party, and conducted under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) targeting coal smuggling proceeds, hawala operators, and handlers.
This incident has intensified the political face-off between the ruling TMC and the BJP ahead of the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections.
