Digital Desk: A seemingly meaningless phrase -“67” (pronounced “six-seven”) ,  has emerged as one of the most viral slang terms among Generation Alpha and Generation Z, dominating social media platforms, classrooms, and internet culture throughout the year 2025 and is also trending in 2026. The term’s explosive popularity has even earned it the title  as the Word of the Year 2025.

Despite its widespread use, “67” has no fixed definition. Instead, it is intentionally nonsensical and is often described as an example of so-called “brain rot” slang , absurd, chaotic language used more for vibe and identity than meaning. The term functions as a filler word, an interjection, or a way for young users to signal membership within an online “in-group.”

The trend traces its origins to the 2024 rap song “Doot Doot (6 7)” by artist Skrilla. The audio gained traction through viral basketball highlight edits, particularly featuring NBA star LaMelo Ball, who stands 6 feet 7 inches tall. The meme’s popularity surged further when Overtime Elite player Taylen “TK” Kinney repeatedly used the phrase in online content.

In March 2025, the phenomenon reached a new peak after a video of a young boy, Maverick Trevillian, later dubbed the “67 Kid” and  went viral. The clip showed him enthusiastically shouting “six-seven” while performing a distinctive hand gesture during a basketball game, cementing the phrase as a cultural meme.

Typically, “67” is delivered alongside a signature gesture in which both palms face upward and move alternately up and down, resembling a weighing motion. In usage, it can loosely imply “maybe,” “so-so,” or simply act as a high-energy, random response , often with no contextual relevance at all.

The trend has had a noticeable offline impact as well. Schools across several regions have reported classroom disruptions, with students shouting “67” during lessons or using it as a nonsensical reply to teachers’ questions. Some commentators have labeled the trend “annoying” and compared its spread to a “plague.”

Beyond schools, “67” has crossed into mainstream culture. Brands have referenced it in marketing campaigns, while video games such as Fortnite and Overwatch 2 have included nods to the meme. The phrase has also been referenced in pop culture, including episodes of South Park. Adding to its digital footprint, Google introduced an Easter egg where typing “67,” “6-7,” or “6 7” causes the screen to shake.

Media analysts say the rise of “67” reflects the growing influence of Generation Alpha in shaping internet culture and highlights how absurdist, digital-native humor can rapidly evolve from a niche meme into a widespread ,and sometimes disruptive — cultural phenomenon.
