Nazira, August 20: Senior Congress leader Debabrata Saikia has launched a scathing critique against both the BJP-led Assam and Central governments, accusing them of failing to deliver adequate compensation and rehabilitation to victims of the recent Dikhow river floods. Addressing a press conference at his residence in Borduwar, Simaluguri, on August 19, the former Nazira MLA and ex-Leader of the Opposition highlighted the prolonged suffering endured by residents.
Saikia underscored that communities across the Nazira sub-division have been grappling with severe hardships for nearly a month, ever since the catastrophic floods began impacting the region on July 19. He alleged a discriminatory approach by the government in evaluating the losses sustained by flood-affected families and subsequently in the distribution of relief. The Congress veteran claimed that more than ten lakh individuals have been impacted by the Dikhow's fury, with numerous families losing nearly all their possessions.
"Where are the Assam and Central governments during this critical period?" Saikia questioned, expressing dismay over what he described as a failure to conduct a proper and comprehensive assessment of the damage. He further criticised the apparent absence of prominent BJP leaders, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah, from the affected areas.
The opposition leader's remarks intensify scrutiny on the state's disaster response mechanisms and the perceived gap between government assurances and ground-level realities for flood-hit populations in Assam.
