  • Just Fair Delimitation (JFD) Convenor Jeetendra Ningombam appeared before Porompat Police in Imphal East following an FIR linked to a 48-hour general strike

Imphal: Jeetendra Ningombam, Convenor of the Just Fair Delimitation (JFD) organisation, presented himself before Porompat Police in Imphal East on Friday. His appearance was in connection with a suo motu First Information Report (FIR) filed by authorities concerning a 48-hour general strike called by the JFD.

The strike, which ran from midnight of August 17 to midnight of August 19, was initiated by the JFD to press its demand for the implementation of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) prior to the upcoming 2026 Census exercise. The organisation also voiced opposition to the ongoing training programmes for Census enumerators within the state.

According to details from the FIR, registered at Porompat Police Station, law enforcement received information via social media around 8:30 pm on August 17 regarding the planned strike. The FIR states that the protest could potentially disrupt daily life for the general public, school students, and the operations of government establishments.

Subsequently, Porompat Police registered FIR No. 240(08)2026 PRT-PS suo motu on August 17 at 9:40 pm. The case has been filed under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023, including Sections 189, 189(2), 191(2), 351(1), 351(2), and 221. This development underscores the heightened sensitivity surrounding the Census and NRC processes in Manipur and the broader Northeast region.
