New Delhi: At least 22 students from Afghanistan studying at various departments of Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) are disinclined to return to their homeland due to fear of the Taliban’s.

Additionally, the Afghan students were worried to stay in India as their visa tenure will expire within December.

Now, they want to extend their Visa tenure through academic courses, including PhD sources said.

Afghan Student in JNU, while talking to ANI, said, “In the war-torn country Afghanistan, people are now unemployed and trying to escape from death or captivity. In this condition, arranging to back to the country is next to impossible.”

Another JNU student, Jalaluddin, said, “Our country is in a critical condition. We are in the hope that the administration will understand our crises and will extend the tenure of our Visa permit.”

“PhD course, in JNU, is very costly for the foreign nationals, basically for the poor families that are certainly no for them, I don’t know to do.” added.

As per rule, if a student visa expires, one cannot study or work until a new permit is given to them. Moreover, one must be sure that their passport doesn’t expire at the same time as the study permit cannot be extended beyond the passport’s expiry date.

“My visa will expire in December before I came to India for study; I was a government employee in Afghanistan. So, I am sure the Taliban’s will kill or capture me if I go back to my country. Moreover, I cannot connect with my family, who used to stay in an area now captured by the Taliban’s. So, we need help.” said a student of International Relations and Area studies in JNU.

On August 14, the JNU administration releases a note stating, “Afghan students have requested the JNU administration to provide their return to the campus. The administration is looking into this matter, as the University has remained closed as per the latest circular issued by the DDMA, Govt. of NCT, DELHI.”
