Digital Desk: Assam's Director General of Police (DGP), G P Singh, has issued a public apology after a video surfaced showing police using excessive force on bikers during a routine check amid the Independence Day celebrations. The incident, which has sparked outrage, was captured on video, showing police officers thrashing bikers with canes and dragging one by the hair at a checkpoint.

The bikers were reportedly stopped for a routine check, but the heavy-handed approach by the police has been widely criticized. In response to the incident, the DGP took to social media platform X to express his disapproval.

"A video has come to my notice where Assam Police personnel are resorting to using cane/lathi during routine checking of vehicles. I profusely apologize for the unwarranted use of force or harsh measures," Singh stated. He also emphasized that lawful force should be limited to unlawful assemblies and criminal activities.

Singh further mentioned that the police personnel involved, along with their supervising officers, have been suitably advised and counselled regarding their actions.

The excessive pressure occurred amid heightened security measures following a bomb threat from the banned militant group United Liberation Front of Asom-Independent (ULFA-I), which claimed to have planted 19 bombs across Assam. Police subsequently conducted extensive searches, recovering several suspicious items.
