Two IAF pilots were killed after a Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district
Digital Desk: On 5th March , an Indian Air Force (IAF) Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district during a routine training mission. The aircraft reportedly lost radar contact shortly after taking off from the Jorhat Air Force Station at around 7:40 am.
According to officials, the fighter jet went down in a hilly area of Karbi Anglong, approximately 60 kilometres from the Jorhat airbase. It is suspected that the aircraft crashed after colliding with the mountainous terrain.
Communication with the control room was lost shortly after take-off, prompting authorities to launch a search and rescue operation in the region.
In a statement, the IAF said, “The Su-30MKI, which was on a training mission, crashed in the area of Karbi Anglong, approximately 60 km from Jorhat. Search operations are currently underway.”
During the rescue operation, the mutilated body of one pilot was recovered from the crash site. Further details are awaited as the search operation continues.
Two IAF pilots were killed after a Sukhoi Su-30MKI fighter jet crashed in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district. The deceased have been identified as Squadron Leader Anuj and Flight Lieutenant Purvesh Duragkar, who sustained fatal injuries in the crash.
In a statement, the Indian Air Force acknowledged the loss of the two officers.
“The IAF acknowledges the loss of Sqn Leader Anuj and Flt Lt Purvesh Duragkar, who sustained fatal injuries in the Su-30 crash. All personnel of the IAF express sincere condolences and stand firmly with the bereaved families in this time of grief,” the statement said.
Inducted into the Indian Air Force in the early 2000s, the Sukhoi Su-30MKI is considered one of the most capable frontline combat aircraft. The IAF currently operates a fleet of more than 200 Sukhoi jets.
