"Modi-Shah ki kabar khudegi JNU ki dharti par"
Digital Desk: Protests and sloganeering were reported at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) on Monday evening, as Left-wing student groups raised anti-Modi and anti-government slogans near the “Guerilla Dhaba” on campus.
Around 30–40 students affiliated with the Students’ Federation of India (SFI), Democratic Students’ Federation (DSF), and All India Students’ Association (AISA) participated in the protest. The demonstration came a day after the Supreme Court denied bail to former JNU students Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in connection with the 2020 Delhi riots case. Slogans such as “Modi-Shah ki kabar khudegi JNU ki dharti par” were reportedly raised, along with chants targeting the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
The protest coincided with the sixth anniversary of the 5th January , 2020 attack on students and teachers at JNU by masked assailants. The JNU Teachers’ Union (JNUTA) commemorated the day as a “brutal attack,” alleging that the perpetrators remain unidentified. The JNU Students’ Union (JNUSU) organised the symbolic “Guerilla Dhaba” event as part of its ongoing protest against the 2020 violence.
Students also voiced opposition to the installation of facial recognition technology and magnetic gates in the campus library. Additionally, protests continue over Delhi Police notices issued to some JNUSU office-bearers related to these issues.
Reacting to the demonstrations, BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla labelled the students as part of the “tukde ecosystem,” calling them “anti-India Urban Naxals” in a post on X. He also accused opposition leaders, including Congress’s Prithviraj Chavan and CPI(M)’s Brinda Karat, of supporting Khalid and Imam. BJP strategist Pradeep Bhandari similarly termed the protesters “Urban Naxals” and criticised them for promoting “anti-India thought.”
