Manipur has saved over Rs 100 crores owing to a reduction in fish imports in the last four and a half years, said the state Chief Minister N Biren Singh. “Manipur’s fish import reduced from 20 metric tonnes to 14 metric tonnes,” said CM Biren Singh.

Manipur’s fish production capacity has increased to 36,000 metric tonnes per year resulting in reduced imports, said the CM. The requirement of fish in Manipur is about 52,000 metric tonnes for consumption.

The state government is working closely with the fish farmers to boost the production of fish in the state, a statement by the Chief Minister. The government has also started to take measures for the production of Sareng (Catfish).

“This will reduce the demand for imported Sareng,” Manipur CM Biren Singh added.
