In a major blow to illegal drug trafficking networks operating in the Northeast, Mizoram Police successfully intercepted a substantial consignment of narcotics worth more than Rs 6.7 crore and apprehended three persons, all residents of Assam, in Saitual district. The significant seizure, announced by officials on June 1, underscores the persistent challenges posed by drug routes crisscrossing the region.
Acting on specific intelligence, a dedicated team from the Saitual District Executive Force initiated an operation on May 31. They successfully intercepted a truck bearing an Assam registration number as it was travelling from Manipur towards Aizawl. A meticulous search of the vehicle led to the discovery of 13 packets containing 6.611 kilograms of morphine, cleverly hidden within a specially designed secret compartment located near the driver's seat.
Authorities estimate the street value of the seized morphine to be approximately Rs 6.7 crore. In addition to the large morphine haul, police also recovered 12 grams of heroin from the same vehicle, which is valued at roughly Rs 2.4 lakh in the illicit market. The three individuals found in possession of the contraband were immediately taken into custody.
While the identities of the arrested persons have not yet been officially released, police have confirmed their residency in Assam. A case has been duly registered, and a comprehensive investigation is now underway. Authorities are working to trace the origin and intended destination of these illicit substances, as well as to uncover any broader links to organised drug syndicates operating across the Northeastern states.
