Digital Desk: The North East Students Organisation (NESO) today, 30th December, submitted a memorandum to Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami, strongly condemning the brutal killing of 24-year-old Anjel Chakma, a student from Tripura, in Dehradun.
The incident took place on 9th December, whereby Anjel Chakma was allegedly beaten and stabbed after he was racially abused. He succumbed to his injuries after two weeks in the hospital on 26th December. His brother, Micheal Chakma, was also reportedly assaulted during the attack.
NESO alleged that the assault was a racially motivated act as the perpetrators chose the victims based on their physical appearance and subjected him to offensive racial slurs. The organisation highlighted that these incidences are indicative of the continued harassment and violence of the people of the Northeast in various parts of India.
The memorandum, endorsed by eight major student bodies; including the All Assam Students’ Union (AASU), Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), Naga Students’ Federation (NSF), Mizo Zirlai Pawl (MZP), Twipra Students’ Federation (TSF), All Manipur Students’ Union (AMSU), Garo Students’ Union (GSU), and All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU); urged the Uttarakhand government to ensure the safety and security of students and residents from the Northeast living in the state.
NESO’s demands included capital punishment for the perpetrators, the establishment of a dedicated police station to handle cases of racial discrimination against Northeastern people, and the enactment of a stringent Anti-Racism law.
In a bid to get the government to step in, NESO urged the Chief Minister to ensure immediate actions action against such occurrences in future, to deliver justice to the victim, and to provide safe environment to all Northeasterners.
The organisation stressed that swift action is essential to curb racially motivated violence and protect vulnerable communities living away from their home states.
