Digital Desk: Today the national capital of India (New Delhi) woke up to its coldest morning of the ongoing winter season as the minimum temperature dipped to 4.2 degrees Celsius, according to the India Meteorological Department. The temperature was 2.7 degrees below the seasonal average, marking a significant cold spell across the national capital.

This is the coldest morning Delhi has experienced since January 2024. The previous coldest January day in recent years was recorded on 15th January , 2024, when the minimum temperature had dropped sharply to 3.3 degrees Celsius, triggering cold wave conditions across the city.

Station-wise data released by the IMD showed a widespread dip in temperatures across Delhi. Safdarjung, the city’s base weather station, recorded a minimum temperature of 4.2 degrees Celsius. Palam and Ayanagar both registered 4.5 degrees Celsius, while Lodhi Road reported 4.7 degrees Celsius. The Ridge station recorded a slightly higher minimum of 5.3 degrees Celsius, indicating uniformly cold conditions across the capital.

Today’s chilly start followed Friday’s second-coldest morning of the season, when the minimum temperature had settled at 4.6 degrees Celsius.

The IMD has also predicted dense fog conditions during the day, which may impact visibility in several parts of the city. Relative humidity was recorded at 100 per cent at 9 am, further intensifying the cold and foggy conditions.

Meanwhile, Delhi’s air quality continued to remain a concern. The Air Quality Index (AQI) was recorded in the ‘very poor’ category at 9 am on Saturday, with a reading of 366, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). As per CPCB standards, an AQI between 301 and 400 falls under the ‘very poor’ category, posing health risks, especially for sensitive groups.

The Delhi government has advised residents to take precautions against the cold, fog, and poor air quality.
