Digital Desk: Padma Shri awardee and Managing Director of The Assam Tribune Group, Prafulla Govinda Baruah, has passed away at the age of 93. The final journey of the esteemed journalist has begun, as his mortal remains were brought to his residence.


Baruah took his last breath at Apollo Hospital due to age-related ailments after a week of treatment. He passed away in the ICU at 9:30 pm on December 14.


A towering figure in Assam's newspaper industry, Baruah was the chairman emeritus of The Assam Tribune. For over six decades, he shaped public opinion in the Northeast, mentored generations of journalists, and ensured that the region’s voice resonated in the corridors of power in New Delhi.


Born into the family that founded The Assam Tribune, Baruah combined academic excellence with an unwavering dedication to ethical journalism.


Under his leadership, the newspaper became the most respected English daily in the Northeast, celebrated for its independence, credibility and commitment to regional issues.


Educated in Assam, Kolkata, and later trained in the United Kingdom, Baruah infused global perspectives into a regional newspaper while preserving its local essence.


His leadership shone during critical moments in history, including the Chinese aggression of 1962, the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, the Assam Movement, years of insurgency, and periods of political uncertainty.


Beyond journalism, Baruah made enduring contributions to Assamese literature, education, culture and economic thought.


He promoted writers and artists, supported institutions, and encouraged informed debate on Assam’s development through initiatives such as Assam Prakalpa.


Awarded the Padma Shri, Baruah remained a humble and accessible figure, respected across political and ideological divides.  


His passing marks the end of an era in Assamese journalism, defined by courage, clarity and unwavering commitment to public service.


Baruah leaves behind a legacy that will inspire generations to come.
