Following the oath-taking of the five new justices early next week, the Supreme Court will have 32 judges instead of its present 27 (including the Chief Justice of India).
Digital Desk: The Centre approved the recruitment of five new judges on Saturday, as suggested by the Collegium on December 13, 2022. They will join the Supreme Court of India. Kiren Rijiju, the union law minister, made the announcements regarding the appointments to the top court.
The five judges appointed to join the Supreme Court are:
- Justice Pankaj Mithal, Chief Justice, Rajasthan High Court
- Justice Sanjay Karol, Chief Justice, Patna High Court
- Justice P V Sanjay Kumar, Chief Justice, Manipur High Court
- Justice Ahsanuddin Amanullah of Patna High Court
- Justice Manoj Misra of Allahabad High Court
Following the oath-taking of the five new justices early next week, the Supreme Court will have 32 judges instead of its present 27 (including the Chief Justice of India). 34 people, including the CJI, are authorised to serve on the supreme court.
The appointments to the supreme court come after the SC bench made pointed criticisms of the government's inaction in the appointment and transfer of justices in response to the SC Collegium's recommendations. A senior government official has stated that the five appointments were made after the administration made a careful choice and had nothing to do with the SC observation.
