Digital Desk: A Bengaluru-based IT professional’s request to work from home for a month following a serious family accident was rejected by her company, despite her providing hospital and police documents as proof. This incident received massive publicity  criticized by posting that Indian work culture is actually insane, which led to the denunciation of the inflexible policies and insensitivity shown by corporate India.


As per report, the mother, the woman’s mother and uncle were involved in a scooter accident last week. Her mother had a fractured arm and her uncle had swollen and bruised hands and face, though he had no  fractures. Concerned for her mother’s recovery, the IT professional requested to work remotely for a month. In spite of submitting MRI scans and the police report, the firm arranged a meeting and eventually refused her WFH request on the grounds of low bandwidth in the team.


The employee expressing her frustration, wrote that she  always heard that big corporations do not have empathy, but the experience of it unfolding in real-life circumstances made it hit different. It’s disgusting.” The post has led to a wider discussion of the welfare of the employees, the nature of work culture, and how the corporate world in India should be more compassionate with its policies.


Notably, the woman had not requested leave but merely permission to work from home, as her role did not require physical office presence. Her uncle, injured in the same accident, was granted only two days of leave and had to resume work despite ongoing pain, with his younger brother helping him commute daily.


This incident highlights the persistent gap between corporate efficiency demands and human-centric workplace practices, raising questions about the balance between productivity and employee well-being.
