Manipur has been under President’s Rule since 13th February, 2025
Digital Desk: BJP leader Yumnam Khemchand Singh is likely to be the next Chief Minister of Manipur after being elected as the Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) Legislative Party Leader.
The development follows the BJP Parliamentary Board’s decision to appoint party national general secretary Tarun Chugh as the central observer for the election of the legislature party leader in Manipur, signalling the possible formation of a popular government in the state. President’s Rule in Manipur is set to expire next week.
Manipur has been under President’s Rule since13th February, 2025, after the resignation of the BJP-led government headed by N Biren Singh amid prolonged ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki communities. The 60-member state assembly, whose tenure runs until 2027, was placed under suspended animation.
Amid fast-paced political developments, NDA MLAs from Manipur have arrived in New Delhi following directions from the BJP central leadership. Those present include former Chief Minister N Biren Singh, Assembly Speaker Satyabrata Singh, former minister Yumnam Khemchand Singh, and BJP state president A Sharda Devi.
The BJP central leadership has held multiple rounds of consultations with Meitei and Kuki MLAs, allies including the NPP and NPF, and Independent legislators to assess whether conditions are conducive for forming a government.
Currently, the BJP has 37 MLAs in the Manipur Assembly, bolstered by defections since the 2022 elections. The move towards government formation comes amid ongoing efforts by the Governor to restore peace following the ethnic violence that erupted in May 2023, which claimed over 260 lives and displaced thousands.
