Prof. Bhattacharyya addressed students on campus
Digital Desk: The Tezpur University witnessed a night of high tension as students, teachers, and staff intensified their ongoing protest against Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh, a movement that has continued since 22nd September. On Monday night, the campus atmosphere turned volatile as demonstrators marched across the university grounds, shouting slogans and burning tyres in a show of defiance.
The fresh wave of unrest erupted after Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh convened a virtual meeting of the Board of Management and announced the appointment of Jayaa Chakraborty, Assistant Professor in the Department of Journalism and Mass Communication; widely believed to be close to him,as the new Pro-Vice Chancellor. The decision was reportedly taken in an attempt to restore normal functioning amid the ongoing impasse.
However, the move sparked immediate outrage. Hundreds of agitating students, faculty members, and university employees rejected the appointment outright, declaring that they would not accept the newly appointed Pro-Vice Chancellor under any circumstances. They accused the Vice-Chancellor of arbitrary and authoritarian functioning and renewed their demand for his immediate removal.
In a significant development, the protesters invoked university regulations and declared senior professor and former Pro-Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr. Dhruba Kumar Bhattacharyya as the legitimate Acting Vice-Chancellor. Responding to the collective decision of the academic community, Prof. Bhattacharyya formally assumed his role.
Shortly after taking office, Prof. Bhattacharyya addressed students on campus. A respected academic and administrator, he urged students to continue striving for excellence, innovation, and research-oriented growth. He emphasised the university’s commitment to academic leadership, transparency, and holistic development and assured the community that steps would be taken to restore peace and normalcy.
As tensions persist, all eyes remain on the Tezpur University’s next administrative moves, with the academic community expecting swift action to resolve the ongoing crisis.
