The destruction is caused by people seeking personal profit, adding that due to the uncontrolled earth cutting has also adversely affected the environment
Digital Desk: The All Raid Marwet People Federation (ARMPF) on Monday submitted a formal complaint to the Deputy Commissioner of Ri-Bhoi, Abhilash Baranwal, regarding the large-scale illegal soil excavation taking place in the Marwet area.
According to ARMPF, the decision to file the complaint with the Deputy Commissioner came after the federation had earlier reported the matter to the Range Officer of the Forest Department at Byrnihat, located at 12 Mile, requesting immediate action to stop the unlawful excavation. However, the forest official and his office allegedly failed to take any action against the perpetrators.
The federation, led by its president, Rink Sohpdang, and secretary, Komol Shakwa, expressed deep concern over the rampant destruction of hills, rivers, and forests in the region, stating that the uncontrolled soil digging has severely damaged local water sources that supply drinking water to surrounding villages.
They further lamented that during heavy rains, if flooding affects the area of Kamrup (M) Guwahati, the blame is often placed on Meghalaya, even though the destruction is caused by people seeking personal profit, adding that due to the uncontrolled earth cutting has also adversely affected the environment.
After meeting with the Deputy Commissioner, the leaders said they were satisfied with his response and hopeful that the DC would extend his support in addressing the challenges faced by the people of Marwet.
However, The Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal, said that, the members of the ARMPF, lodged their complaint on the illegal earth cutting for which he as the head of the district administration will report the same to the higher ups of the Forest Department to conduct prior survey.
