Digital Desk: Indonesian police said on Sunday that 127 people
were killed and 180 were injured in a stampede that occurred overnight during a
football match in the province of East Java.
Following the conclusion of the match between Arema FC and
Persebaya Surabaya, supporters of the losing team invaded the pitch and police
fired tear gas, causing a stampede and cases of suffocation, according to East
Java police chief Nico Afinta.
Local news channels broadcast footage of people rushing onto the
pitch in Malang's stadium, as well as images of body bags.
The Indonesian top league, BRI Liga 1, has suspended games for a
week following the 3-2 victory by Persebaya, and an investigation has been
launched, according to the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI).
There have been previous outbreaks of trouble at matches in Indonesia, with the fierce rivalry between clubs occasionally leading to violence among fans.
