Digital Desk: The
four accused detained in Gujarat in connection with the 1993 Mumbai blasts have
been remanded in the custody of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) till
May 30.
On May 17, nearly 29 years after serial bomb
bombings rocked Mumbai, killing 257 people, Abu Bakar, Sayyed Qureshi, Shoeb
Qureshi, and Yusud Bhatka were captured.
One of the defendants, Salim Mira Shaikh,
described the four as accused participants in firearms and explosives training
in Pakistan. They allegedly also took part in the plot and planning sessions
for the bombings.
The CBI took custody of the four based on the
warrant issued against them during the investigation. The four were produced
before the special court on Monday. The CBI sought their custody for 14 days
for custodial interrogation.
Deepak Salvi, a special CBI prosecutor, advocated for the four's detention, claiming that the role they played and their ties to the principal conspirators needed to be investigated.
The lawyers for the four, Farhana Shah and Sultan Khan, said that almost 750 witnesses' statements were recorded during the investigation. During the trial of the case, charges were filed against the apprehended as well as the absconding accused.
The accused did not comply with the investigative agency by fleeing, according to the court. The defendants filed an application with the court stating that they will not make any confessional comments.
