Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday revealed an ambitious infrastructure initiative aimed at transforming regional connectivity, proposing to bring all corners of Assam within a six-hour travel radius. This vision seeks to drastically cut down journey times that currently span up to 13 to 15 hours, fostering enhanced trade, tourism, and overall accessibility across the Northeast.
Addressing the state's future development, Sarma highlighted the government's commitment to building a robust network of expressways and high-speed corridors. A cornerstone of this plan is the proposed Shillong-Silchar High-Speed Corridor, a project that has now commenced work. This corridor is an integral part of the broader Siliguri-Silchar Expressway initiative, poised to reshape travel dynamics in the region.
According to the Chief Minister, the Shillong-Silchar corridor is slated for development at an estimated cost of ₹22,864 crore. This significant investment will facilitate the construction of a 166.8-kilometre greenfield, four-lane access-controlled highway. Designed for faster, safer, and more efficient transportation, the new artery is expected to substantially strengthen connectivity between key areas, offering a major boost to regional integration and economic activities.
The ambitious project underscores Assam's strategic role in improving logistical pathways throughout the Northeast, promising a future where travel across the diverse landscape is not only quicker but also more seamless for residents and visitors alike.
