Digital Desk: The ruling National Democratic Alliance has a majority in the electoral college, thus the BJP parliamentary board will meet this week to choose their vice presidential candidate, who will almost certainly hold the seat, according to Press Trust of India.

In light of signs that the Opposition may also put out a candidate to force a contest, as it did for the presidential election, BJP officials informed Press Trust of India that the party will also approach other parties to seek a consensus over the choice.

The parliamentary board is the BJP's highest administrative body, and among its members are party president J P Nadda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Union ministers Amit Shah, Rajnath Singh, and Nitin Gadkari.

The deadline for submitting ballot nominations is July 19, and the election is set for August 6.

Members of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha make up the electoral college for choosing the next vice president, who is also the Rajya Sabha chairperson.

The BJP alone has 394 MPs, which is more than the 390 needed for a majority of the current 780 members of Parliament.

The current president's tenure ends on August 10th.
