Guwahati: The Assam cabinet has cleared the deck for the reservation of seats in the medical colleges for the students belonging to the tea tribe community of the state.
As many as 24 MBBS seats and three BDS seats have been reserved for the tea tribe community which has been proportionally divided between the Brahmaputra Valley and the Barak valley, in a decision taken by the cabinet yesterday. The tea garden community has been spread across over 800 major estates and small tea gardens.

As many as 18 seats have been reserved for the Brahmaputra Valley students of the community, six have been reserved for the Barak Valley. Likewise, two BDS seats are for the Brahmaputra Valley and one for the Barak Valley.
Among other important decisions, the Cabinet approved the conversion of a land allotment certificate to a periodic ‘patta’ (title deed to a property) within three years of allotment in the rural areas.
Assistance to priests and ‘namghorias’ will also be provided with an one-time grant of ₹15,000.
During its meet, the cabinet also decided to provide ration to migrant workers affected by Covid-19. The district officials have been tasked to distribute the dry ration. The data of the migrant workers are to be taken out form e-shram portal.
