Despite the commencement of general elections and the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), citizens reported receiving messages

Digital Desk: The Election Commission has instructed the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) to cease the dissemination of "Viksit Bharat" messages via WhatsApp, following numerous complaints.

Despite the commencement of general elections and the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), citizens reported receiving messages promoting government initiatives. MeitY explained that while some messages were dispatched before the MCC was enforced, delays due to system and network constraints might have led to their delivery after the onset of the MCC.

The polling body reported that, in spite of the announcement of the general elections and the implementation of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC), it had received multiple complaints from residents who had received texts on their phones touting government activities.

This action is part of the Commission's efforts to ensure a fair electoral environment. The "Viksit Bharat Sampark" WhatsApp messages, accompanied by a letter from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have been soliciting feedback and suggestions from citizens.

In his letter, PM Modi emphasised the importance of citizen input in realising the vision of a developed India. Addressing recipients as "my dear family members," PM Modi underscored the government's achievements and sought continued support for its initiatives.

Opposition leaders criticised the Election Commission for not intervening sooner, alleging a blatant violation of the model code of conduct.
