Shillong: Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday declared the Northeast region poised to emerge as India's subsequent economic powerhouse, leveraging its inherent strengths in sustainable agriculture and high-quality organic production. Speaking after inaugurating the Northeast's largest organic spice processing facility of the Eastern Ri-Bhoi Organic Farmer Producer Company Ltd at Lumdaitkhla in Bhoirymbong, the Minister underscored the growing significance of quality over mere volume in the agricultural sector.
Sitharaman articulated a vision for modern agriculture where success would increasingly favour producers of superior, cleaner, more traceable, and trusted premium goods, rather than those focused solely on maximum output. This perspective positions the Northeast, with its rich biodiversity and traditional farming practices, as ideally suited to meet future market demands.
Highlighting Meghalaya's unique advantages, the Finance Minister noted that the state need not strive to compete with larger agricultural states in terms of production scale. Instead, its focus on premium organic offerings would provide a distinct competitive edge. She drew a direct correlation, stating that the prosperity of Meghalaya's farmers would uplift the entire Northeast, thereby providing a fresh impetus to India's overall growth trajectory. Sitharaman also commended the Meghalaya government, various women collectives, and local entrepreneurs for their dedicated efforts in advancing the state's organic farming movement.
The inauguration of the new processing plant symbolises a significant step towards realising this vision, providing crucial infrastructure for farmers to process and market their organic produce. This strategic focus on high-value, sustainable agriculture is expected to unlock substantial economic opportunities across the region, aligning with the broader national agenda for inclusive growth.
