“Hand Siddharth over to us” and “Joi Zubeen Da!”
Digital Desk: Garima Saikia Garg, wife of late singer Zubeen Garg, took to Facebook on Thursday morning, 16th October , to express her profound grief and appeal for peace in the aftermath of violent clashes outside Baksa District Jail on Wednesday.
In an emotional post, Garima wrote, “I have not only lost my husband. Every Assamese household has lost a son, a brother, a friend, or a loved one. People all over the world who loved him have also felt this loss. Everyone’s hearts and minds are heavy with grief, pain, and many questions.”
Urging people to the call to be calm and united , she went ahead to add that this is precisely when we all have to attempt to see the way all the others feel. We need not think about being straightforward and using formalities but just encourage each other using simple and nice words. Peace and unity, and may there be no tidings of more mischief and disturbances, God willing.
Her appeal came shortly after tensions flared in Baksa district following the transfer of five accused — Shyamkanu Mahanta, Siddharth Sharma, Sandeepan Garg, and two personal security officers, Nandeshwar Bora and Paresh Baishya — to the district jail. The five are in judicial custody in connection with the mysterious death of Zubeen Garg.
The demonstration then became violent where hundreds of protestors had assembled outside the jail demanding justice. Slogans such as “Hand Siddharth over to us” and “Joi Zubeen Da!” echoed through the crowd, leading to clashes with police, incidents of stone-pelting, vandalism, and even arson.
At least 21 people were injured, including 10 police personnel, two journalists, and several civilians. Two civilians in critical condition were shifted to GMCH, while others were referred to AIIMS Guwahati.
In response, the administration deployed additional police and RAF teams, imposing prohibitory orders under Section 163 BNSS across Mushalpur and nearby areas to restore peace and prevent further unrest.
