Digital Desk: As 19th October, approaches, Assam prepares to mark one month since the untimely demise of its beloved singer, heartthrob of Assam, composer, and cultural icon Zubeen Garg. As a way to pay respect to the late singer, a memorial programme is planned to be held at his cremation place in Kamarkuchi, Sonapur, where thousands of followers are likely to attend to pay their tribute to the legend who marked a period in Assamese music.
According to organisers, around 2,000 devotees will participate in the tribute by singing devotional hymns in unison, creating a heartfelt musical offering for the departed soul . As a symbolic act/symbolic performance, more than 100 flute players will perform together, evoking the spiritual harmony and artistic brilliance that Zubeen embodied throughout his life.
The evening will also feature a traditional Bhaona — a revered form of Assamese religious theatre — staged in memory of the artist, highlighting his deep connection with culture, spirituality, and the performing arts.
Over the past month, Kamarkuchi has transformed into an emotional pilgrimage site. People from every corner of Assam, irrespective of caste, creed, and religion continues to visit it, lighting diyas (earthen lamps) praying and singing bhajans in his memory. The air is filled with songs and worship, transforming sorrow into a glorification of life and heritage.
The site is now fondly known by many as Zubeen Dham, where faith, art and love meet. Every night the memorial field is lit with candles as the followers recollect his immortal music. Children hum his songs, the elderly whispers prayers and the youth of Assam recount how Zubeen’s music inspired their dreams.
Nowadays Sonapur is full of music and devotion together, a reminder that even though Zubeen Garg might have left the mortal world, his spirit still lives in every note, every flame and every heart that beats to his beat.
