The petitioner contended that the election process ought to be put on hold until their body joined the WFI and they can nominate their representative in the electoral college.

Digital Desk: The Gauhati High Court on Sunday stayed the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) elections which was scheduled to be held on July 11, on a petition filed by the Assam Wrestling Association.

Assam Wrestling Association claimed in a petition it filed against the WFI, the IOA ad hoc body, and the Sports Ministry that, despite a recommendation from the WFI Executive Committee made at the WFI's General Council in Gonda on November 15, 2014, the WFI granted it membership as an affiliated member.

The ad hoc commission set June 25 as the deadline for submitting names for the electoral college, and July 11 would be the date of the elections to choose the new governing body.

The petitioner contended that the election process ought to be put on hold until their body joined the WFI and they can nominate their representative in the electoral college.

The court ordered the respondents—the WFI ad hoc body and the Sports Ministry—that till the next date is fixed for hearing they should not proceed with the elections of the Executive Committee of the WFI.

The next hearing date was set by the court for July 17.
