Digital Desk: Punjab’s Mallika Handa, who made India proud by becoming the first Indian woman to win Gold at World Deaf Chess Championship, has accused Punjab Sports Minister to fulfill their promises. The International player while blaming the government, opined in a video post, that the government has failed to live upto its promises made to her.
Using sign language, the player alleged that Punjab Sports Minister Pargat Singh told her that the government cannot assist her with any job or cash award because “they do not have policy for deaf sports.”

Handa also alleged that the government had even announced a cash award for her along with a “letter of invitation” in which she was invited. The event was cancelled due to Covid.
“I am only asking, why was it announced? Only to be ditched and rebuked later?” added Handa.
Mallika Handa further stressed in the video that when she questioned the sports minister about their unfulfilled promises, the minister curtly told her that the announcement of a cash award was made by the former minister.
Mallika Handa has won Seven National Chess Championships (of the deaf). She has won Gold and 2 slver medals in the International Chess Committee of the Deaf (ICCD) World Deaf Championships over the years.

Along with the above mentioned recognitions, Mallika Handa also carries the laurels of being the former Asian Champion as well as World Champion in ICCD Deaf Championships.
No clarification has been dispatched yet on the part of the Punjab government on Handa’s case. The player’s disappointment and desperation shows the sheer apathy most of our players have to face due to government’s negligence.
