Digital Desk: Chaudhry Anwarul Haq, a lawmaker from former Prime Minister Imran Khan's party, was elected as the "prime minister" of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir on Thursday.

The top position became vacant last week after former "premier" Sardar Tanveer Ilyas Khan was disqualified by the country's high court for insulting the top judiciary.

Haq, the Speaker of the region's assembly, gained the confidence of all 48 members present in the house as all major parties rallied behind him, including Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf, Pakistan Peoples Party, and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz.

His predecessor was dismissed in a dramatic decision by the region's high court on April 11 for contempt of court for attacking the top judiciary in a public speech.

Earlier in the day, an assembly session meant to elect a new "prime minister" was adjourned without any voting taking place.

At an event in Islamabad, Sardar Tanveer obliquely accused the court of interfering with the executive branch's authority and impairing the operation of his government by issuing stay orders.

Even though he showed up in court and offered an apology, it was rejected. Later, the region's top court denied his appeal as well.
