Digital Desk: The International Women’s Day, observed globally on 8th March , serves as a powerful reminder of the accomplishments, strength, and influence of women in society. From leadership roles to groundbreaking achievements in science, business, education, and politics, women continue to leave an indelible mark across every sphere of life. The day also highlights the ongoing struggles many women face and reinforces the collective responsibility to build a more equal and inclusive world.

International Women’s Day commemorates the long-standing fight for equality and liberation led by women and the global women’s rights movement. It also draws attention to pressing issues such as gender equality, reproductive rights, and violence and abuse against women. The origins of the day can be traced back to labour movements in Europe and North America during the early 20th century, inspired by the universal women’s suffrage movement.

On 8th March , 2026, people around the world are encouraged to stand in solidarity with women and girls to demand equal rights and equal justice, ensuring that these rights can be fully enforced, exercised, and enjoyed.

Despite progress in many areas, gender inequality remains a major global challenge. Reports indicate that no country has yet fully closed the legal gaps between men and women. Currently, women worldwide possess only about 64 per cent of the legal rights that men enjoy. In crucial areas of life, including work, financial independence, safety, family rights, property ownership, mobility, business opportunities, and retirement, the law often continues to disadvantage women.

Each year, International Women’s Day is marked by a theme that highlights specific challenges faced by women. The International Women’s Day 2026 campaign, “Give To Gain,” promotes a spirit of generosity, collaboration, and collective progress. While global themes may vary across organisations, many countries also adopt their own themes that emphasise gender equality, economic empowerment, inclusion, and breaking barriers for women.

This year’s global call to action, “Rights. Justice. Action. For All Women and Girls,” urges governments, institutions, and communities to dismantle barriers that hinder equal justice. The campaign stresses the need to address discriminatory laws, strengthen legal protections, and challenge harmful practices and social norms that continue to undermine the rights of women and girls.

As the world observes International Women’s Day 2026, the message remains clear: achieving true equality requires continued commitment, meaningful action, and collective effort from societies across the globe.
