Digital Desk: The festival of Holi would be incomplete without the vibrant rainbow of colours that mark our faces and clothes. However, while the celebrations bring joy and excitement, the stubborn stains left behind on garments can be difficult to remove.

Experts suggest acting quickly to prevent the colours from setting into the fabric. Start by shaking off any dry powder from the clothing. Immediately rinse the fabric with cold running water, never hot water, as heat can set the colour deeper into the material. The clothes can then be soaked for 30 to 60 minutes in a solution of water mixed with white vinegar, baking soda, or lemon juice to help loosen the stains.

For more stubborn stains, a small amount of hydrogen peroxide or oxygen-based bleach can be applied before washing. However, harsh chlorine bleach should be avoided as it can damage the fabric and alter its original colour.

Treating White Clothes

If the stained garment is white, it can be soaked in hot water mixed with a non-chlorine bleach. After soaking, wash the garment with a mild liquid detergent. Experts recommend washing and drying the garment separately and keeping it away from direct sunlight initially to prevent colour transfer to other clothes.

Chlorine bleach should never be used on coloured garments, as it can cause discoloration.

Key Tips for Removing Holi Stains

· Shake Off Dry Powder: Remove loose colour before washing.

· Cold Water Rinse: Rinse the fabric from the back under cold running water to push the colour out rather than deeper into the fabric.

· Vinegar Soak: Soak the garment in a mixture of one part white vinegar and two parts water for 30–60 minutes.

· Lemon and Baking Soda: Apply a paste of baking soda and lemon juice directly to stubborn stains, let it sit briefly, then rinse.

· Gentle Cleaning: Use a mild detergent and avoid excessive scrubbing, which may damage the fabric.

· Drying: Sunlight can help naturally fade remaining colour, but delicate fabrics should be handled carefully.

Fabric Care Advice

For delicate fabrics such as silk or satin, avoid soaking the garment. Instead, gently dab the stained area with cold water to prevent damage.

What to Avoid

·  Hot Water: Using hot water can permanently set the stain.

·  Chlorine Bleach: Harsh bleach may damage fabrics and fade their original colour.

With the right care and quick action, most Holi stains can be removed effectively, allowing revellers to enjoy the colourful festival without worrying about ruined clothes.
