"The Kargil Vijay Diwas is a representation of Maa Bharati's majesty and beauty. Salute to all the heroic sons of the nation who have demonstrated their courage in the protection of the motherland on this day.

Digital Desk: Today is the 23rd anniversary of the Kargil Vijay Diwas, which is being observed in India. The Kargil War, also known as the Kargil war, was officially over on this date in 1999 when Indian troops successfully reclaimed mountain peaks that had been taken by Pakistani intruders.

Amit Shah, the home minister, and Rajnath Singh, the defence minister, among others, joined Prime Minister Narendra Modi in paying respect to the soldiers who died on July 26, 1999, on Twitter.

"The Kargil Vijay Diwas is a representation of Maa Bharati's majesty and beauty. Salute to all the heroic sons of the nation who have demonstrated their courage in the protection of the motherland on this day. Thank you! "Tweeted the prime minister.

"India honours the bravery, courage, and sacrifice of our armed forces on Kargil Vijay Diwas. In incredibly difficult circumstances, they bravely fought to protect our nation. Their act of bravery and unwavering spirit will be long remembered as a pivotal milestone in India's history "The Minister of Defense tweeted.

To improve coordination among all three services of the nation's armed forces, Rajnath Singh announced the creation of "joint theatre commands" on Sunday.

The defence minister declared that Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) was, is, and will always be a part of India while speaking at the "Kargil Vijay Diwas" celebration in Jammu. "We are firmly committed to the PoK resolution that was approved by the Parliament. PoK was, is, and will always be a fundamental component of India. How is it possible that Maa Sharda Shakti is on the other side of the Line of Control and Baba Amarnath (Lord Shiva's avatar) is in India? "asked he.

At the Kargil War Memorial in Drass, a wreath-laying ceremony is being held in remembrance of the soldiers.

Here Is What You Need To Know About The Kargil War

·         On July 26, 1999, the Indian Army beat Pakistan. The day has since been celebrated as Kargil Vijay Diwas to honour the valour and pride of the Indian military personnel.

·         The last time India and Pakistan engaged in full-fledged armed combat was during the Kargil War. The Kargil War marked the first time that India and Pakistan engaged in hostilities after developing nuclear weapons. The Pakistan Army crossed the Line of Control into India and captured important mountain peaks, starting the Kargil War.

·         The incursion was first discovered in May 1999, although at the time it was believed that the perpetrators were terrorists or militants rather than members of the Pakistani Army.

·         The Kargil-Drass area of Jammu and Kashmir was the scene of a high-altitude conflict as the Indian Army responded with greater force to Pakistan's heavy shelling on May 9 as it attempted to offer cover fire to let more invaders cross over to the Indian side.

·         The Indian Air Force also started a limited strike by the end of May. Two fighter planes and one chopper belonging to the IAF were destroyed. As a result, the Indian attack was intensified in June and July to retake important sites that the Pakistan Army had covertly taken over.

·         It soon became clear that it was the Pakistan Army that had crossed the Line of Control over the ensuing few weeks as Indian soldiers bravely fought to retake the heights of Kargil.

·         India's response was to wage a military and diplomatic offensive that drove the Pakistani invaders off the taken heights and isolated Islamabad internationally. The decisive conflict took place over Tiger Hill.

·         The Kargil-Drass sector's highest mountain is located there. After an 11-hour gunfight, Tiger Hill was retaken by the Indian Army. The Indian Army's most effective weapon in the high-altitude conflict turned out to be the Bofors guns that were obtained in a contentious agreement from Italy.India recaptured all the peaks by July 26, 1999, bringing the Kargil conflict to an end.

·         More than 500 Indian soldiers died in the Kargil War.
