Kokrajhar, Assam: Sericulture farmers in Kokrajhar recently benefited from a specialized technology demonstration programme designed to significantly enhance the productivity of Muga and Eri silk. The initiative, held at the Composite Farm, Kowabil, on Wednesday, focused on equipping local producers with the latest scientific practices and cutting-edge technologies.
Organised under the "Mera Resham Mera Abhimaan (MRMA) 2.0" campaign, the programme saw collaboration between the Central Silk Board (CSB) and the State Sericulture Department. Dr. Suraksha Chanotra, Scientist-B from CSB's MESSO, P-3 Unit, Kowabil, spearheaded the event alongside Kalpojita Basumatary, Extension Officer from the Directorate of Sericulture, Kokrajhar, and other key state officials.
A central focus of the demonstration was the importance of maintaining stringent hygienic rearing conditions. Farmers received practical training on the correct application of disinfectants such as Nirmool, Sodium Hypochlorite, and bleaching powder. These practices are crucial for minimizing disease risks and, consequently, improving overall crop productivity.
Furthermore, participants were introduced to advanced mechanisation technologies developed by the Central Silk Board. Live demonstrations showcased the efficient use of power sprayers and pruning saws, vital tools for effective host-plant management in both Muga and Eri sericulture. This hands-on training aims to empower farmers with methods that not only increase yield but also streamline their operations, contributing to the sustainable growth of Assam's vital silk industry.
