Digital Desk: Lachit Divas, observed every year on 24th November , commemorates the unparalleled bravery, leadership, and patriotism of Lachit Borphukan ;  the iconic commander of the Ahom Kingdom who halted Mughal expansion into Assam during the historic Battle of Saraighat in 1671. The day is still observed today with great pride in Assam and in the rest of India; not merely as a great military victory but also as the spirit of resistance and cultural identity which has continued to this day.

The Ahom dynasty, in Assam, ruled the Brahmaputra Valley from the 13th to the early 19th century. Renowned for their strong governance, military organisation, and deep cultural integration with indigenous communities, the Ahoms shaped the region’s history for nearly 6 centuries.

Lachit Borphukan became a very senior military leader of King Chakradhwaja Singha. He was chosen as one of the 5 crucial councillors of the kingdom with a military, judicial and administrative role, an uncommon set and an important and unique set that created a prominent capacity and trusted leadership.

The Battle of Saraighat, fought on the turbulent waters of the Brahmaputra River, remains one of India’s most significant naval battles. Despite suffering from severe illness, Lachit led from the front and inspired his soldiers with extraordinary courage and strategic brilliance. His unwavering determination resulted in a resounding defeat of the Mughal forces, decisively halting their advance into the North-East.

Although Lachit Borphukan passed away in 1672, just a year after the victory, his legacy continues to shine through Assamese history, culture, and folklore. Even Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured him, stating, “On Lachit Divas, we remember Lachit Borphukan, a symbol of courage, patriotism and true leadership. His heroism continues to inspire generations.”

Lachit Divas stands as a tribute to a leader who refused to surrender his homeland, embodying the resolute spirit of Assam for generations to come.
