Digital Desk: Strong reactions have erupted following an incident in Srirampur, located in the Assam-Bengal border in Kokrajhar district, where lawyers were allegedly attacked last night by police and individuals reportedly backed by the police.
According to reports, around 60 lawyers from the Gossaigaon Bar Association had organised a picnic in the neighbouring state of West Bengal. While returning around 9 pm, the group was allegedly assaulted by the Srirampur Police.
The incident reportedly occurred due to severe traffic jam that developed earlier in the evening near the inter-state check post at Srirampur, leaving the lawyers’ vehicles stranded for over two hours.
When the lawyers requested the police to open an alternate route, tensions escalated, and the police allegedly launched an aggressive attack. Shockingly, a group of individuals, reportedly backed by the police, joined in and brutally assaulted more than six lawyers, including a woman.
Among the injured were advocates Inamul Haque, Shakiyat Ali, Mafizur Rahman, Noor Alam, and a woman named Kanika Rai, who sustained severe injuries.
Following the attack, the lawyers staged a sit-in protest on the national highway, causing a complete halt to vehicular movement.
Mafizur Rahman, Assistant Secretary of the Gossaigaon Bar Association, demanded strict actions against those involved, questioning whether such treatment of lawyers in Srirampur reflects the plight ordinary citizens might face.
In connection with the incident, the police detained Uttam Barman, who was allegedly involved in the attack. Injured Inamul Haque was initially admitted to RNB Hospital but later referred to Kokrajhar for advanced treatment.
