A BCCI official said Umesh Yadav has been instructed to join the team. Yadav is now undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore after suffering a quad muscle injury while playing for Middlesex in the English county season.

Digital Desk: After receiving harsh criticism for his 10-month absence from the T20 squad, Mohammad Shami was selected as a standby for the World T20 squad. Unfortunately, Shami tested positive for COVID and will not play in the three T20 matches against Australia. Umesh Yadav has been called in as a replacement, despite the fact that he last featured in a T20I in February 2019 against Australia.

"Shami's test results are good. A BCCI official said Umesh Yadav has been instructed to join the team. Yadav is now undergoing rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore after suffering a quad muscle injury while playing for Middlesex in the English county season.

As of now, it's unclear whether the symptoms are minor or dangerous. When Shami is deemed match-fit, the medical staff will decide whether or not to allow him to play in the three T20 games against South Africa. The Indian squad will play its first Twenty20 match against Australia on September 20 in Mohali, and then on September 23 and 25 in Nagpur and Hyderabad, respectively, it will play its second and third Twenty20 matches.

During India's disastrous run in the Asia Cup, one of the more well-known supporters of Shami was the former India coach, Ravi Shastri.

"I find it strange that Mohammed Shami is sitting at home. Shastri then stated on Star Sports that he was not making the cut after the IPL. Shami last participated in an India T20 match in November.

Shami had taken 20 wickets from 16 games for the Gujarat Lions, who eventually won the IPL in 2022, averaging 24.40 and having an economy rate of 8.

With 11 wickets at an economy rate of 6.62, Shami had the most powerplay dismissals of any bowler in the 2022 IPL.

Middlesex Cricket announced in a statement on Saturday that Yadav won't be coming back to London to play in the club's county matches.

Middlesex was hopeful that the Indian international would be returning to the club to play a part in the effort for promotion to the top flight of the Championship structure with two red-ball games remaining in the season, away to Leicestershire next week and away to Worcestershire the following week, the club said in a statement.

"The right-arm quick travelled back to India after incurring the injury for a medical evaluation with the BCCI's medical team, where he started treatment and rehabilitation on the injury while beginning a back-to-bowling programme."
