Reports suggest that the Punjab Police is prepared to re-arrest Singh in connection with other cases

Digital Desk: Amritpal Singh, currently lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail, is set to see the clear sky, freedom after ending  his detention under the National Security Act (NSA) on the night of 22nd April. Singh has been in custody under the NSA since 23rd April, 2023. The Punjab and Haryana High Court has decided not to extend the NSA detention further. Although his initial detention was valid until 2024, it had been extended twice, with the final extension expiring today.

However, despite the lapse of the NSA provisions, Singh is unlikely to be released immediately. The High Court has directed that legal proceedings in multiple pending cases against him continue while he remains in custody at Dibrugarh Central Jail.

Sources indicate that the Punjab Police is prepared to re-arrest Singh in connection with other cases as soon as he is formally released. A senior team of Punjab Police officials has already arrived in Dibrugarh in anticipation.

Singh, who leads the outfit Waris Punjab De, had been accused of instigating violent activities, including the Ajnala police station incident in February 2023. A case (No. 39/2023) was registered in connection with the attack, and he is expected to be re-arrested in relation to that case.

In total, 12 cases have been registered against Singh and 41 of his associates. He was brought to Dibrugarh Central Jail under NSA detention in April 2023, along with nine aides.

Notably, while in custody, Singh contested the 2024 General Elections as an independent candidate from the Khadoor Sahib Lok Sabha constituency and won. He took oath as a Member of Parliament on July 5, 2024, which remains his only attendance in Parliament so far. His pleas for parole to attend subsequent parliamentary sessions were rejected by the court.

Meanwhile, the NSA detention of his nine associates ended in 2025, after which they were re-arrested in other cases and taken to Punjab.

Separately, Singh also faces legal proceedings in Dibrugarh. On 17th February, 2024, prohibited electronic items, including a CCTV camera, were allegedly recovered from his prison cell. A case was filed by jail authorities in connection with the incident, and the matter is under judicial review. The incident also led to the arrest of the then jail superintendent.

With the NSA detention ending tonight, Punjab Police is expected to take Singh into custody again to proceed with further legal action, although no official statement has been issued so far.
