Digital Desk: More than 1.5 million people have submitted applications for the compulsory pass for the upcoming football World Cup, which starts on November 20, Qatar said on Sunday.

Between 1.5 million and 1.7 million people have so far applied for the card, which serves as a visa, match ticket, and transportation ticket, and grants admission to specific fan zones, according to Saad Al-Suwaidi, head of the Hayya pass service.

From November 1, all visitors to Qatar, whether they want to attend a game or not, will need a pass to enter.

More than a million foreign visitors as well as tens of thousands of native fans are expected, according to Qatar.

International fans must apply for the pass after purchasing tickets and making travel arrangements.

According to officials, Doha's two international airports are ready to handle 150,000 entries each day.

Those travelling from Saudi Arabia by land must take a bus to Doha or fork up $1,375 to drive their own vehicle.

According to officials, border agents would be able to handle 4,000 passengers per hour at the Abu Samra land crossing.
