The notification came amid a significant uproar over reports that the milk supplement included a high sugar content.

Digital Desk: The National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has written to Mondelez India International, the manufacturer of the health drink Bournvita, requesting a review and the removal of misleading marketing and container labels. The notification came amid a significant uproar over reports that the milk supplement included a high sugar content.

"It has been brought to the Commission's attention that your product contains a high percentage of sugar and contents/substances/mixtures/formula that may have a negative impact on the health of children," the notice stated, addressing Deepak Iyer, president of Mondelez International, India.

The child rights organization also urged the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and the Central Consumer Protection Authority to take action against companies that do not follow food safety or advertising norms.

The controversy started after a health influencer blasted Bournvita in a video, stating that the powder supplement includes excessive levels of sugar, cocoa solids, and a cancer-causing colourant. He later removed the video when the firm received a legal notice accusing him of making false allegations.

A representative for Bournvita previously stated that the formulation of its milk supplement was "scientifically crafted by a team of nutritionists and food scientists to offer the best of taste and health." All of our claims are verifiable and transparent, and all of our substances are FDA-approved. All of the relevant nutritional information is provided on the package to allow consumers to make informed decisions.

However, NCPCR stated that Bournvita "fails to display mandatory disclosures in accordance with the guidelines and regulations of FSSAI and under the Consumer Protection Act," and requested a response from the company within a week.
