Digital Desk: Repair work has finally begun inside the Maibang highway tunnel along the East–West Corridor in Assam’s Dima Hasao district. However, the work is reportedly being carried out in violation of government safety guidelines, raising concerns among commuters and local observers.

As per local reports from Haflong, the tunnel on the Silchar section of the East–West Corridor had developed large potholes, posing a serious risk to motorists. The tunnel has also long suffered from inadequate lighting, a problem that has remained unresolved for a considerable period.

Despite repeated complaints and safety concerns, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had earlier failed to take timely action to repair the damaged stretch. Observers allege that while these issues persisted, the NHAI appeared more focused on reopening the Jatinga–Harangajao route rather than addressing the deteriorating condition of the tunnel.

Although repair work has now commenced, reports suggest that the restoration is being carried out without adhering to the prescribed government safety norms. Labourers working at the site reportedly lack basic protective equipment, and no visible road safety arrangements have been put in place for commuters passing through the tunnel.

Sources said that an outside contractor, DC Azmira, was awarded the responsibility from 1st July, 2024, to maintain the 57-kilometre stretch from near Hatikhali Government Model Degree College to Nerim Bungalow, which includes the upkeep of the tunnel. However, the contractor allegedly showed little urgency in initiating the repair work for several months, allowing the situation to worsen.

Even after the work has begun, compliance with official standards appears to be lacking. A site engineer associated with the DC Azmira contracting group reportedly admitted that the repair work is not being carried out in accordance with the prescribed norms.

The situation has raised fresh questions regarding road safety and oversight in the maintenance of this key highway corridor.
