Digital Desk: A tragic incident occurred at Changjurai in kampur, claiming the lives of seven elephants after being hit by a high-speed train. The Rajdhani Express collided with the herd, resulting in their deaths. The impact caused five coaches and engine of the train to derail.
Fortunately, all passengers on board escaped unharmed. The accident took place at 2:17 am. The devastating incident unfolded at night in Changjurai, Kampur in Nagaon.
Despite the loco pilot applying emergency brakes, the train could not stop in time, leading to the fatal collision. The elephants had come out in search of food when the tragedy struck.
The train services were severely disrupted, leaving many passengers stranded at the site until early morning. In response, the Northeast Frontier Railway arranged a special train from Guwahati to assist the stranded passengers.
To aid in the rescue and assistance efforts, the railway department introduced three helpline numbers.
The train, which was travelling from Sairang in Mizoram to New Delhi, resumed its journey to Guwahati at 6:11 am, leaving behind the derailed coaches.
Remarkably, a baby elephant survived the accident and is now receiving medical treatment from the forest department officials present at the site.
It is worth noting that human-elephant conflicts have been on the rise in Kampur for years.
The herd had ventured out of the forest into human settlements in search of food, leading to this unfortunate incident.
A similar tragedy occurred a few years ago in Patiyapam, Kampur, where five wild elephants lost their lives in a train collision.
