  • Bhanupriya reveals overwhelming workload during night shifts
  • She was arrested following the death of a newborn at GMCH

Digital Desk: Sister-in-charge in the NICU of Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Bhanupriya Mishong's confession has sparked widespread concerns following her arrest on Tuesday.

Bhanupriya was arrested after Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's directives to probe the death of a 4-day-old newborn at GMCH.

During police interrogation, Bhanupriya disclosed that GMCH has three NICU rooms, and at the time of the tragic incident, she was handling 35 infants in one of the NICUs.

The incident occurred when Bhanupriya went to prepare food for the infants, revealing the challenges nurses faced during night shifts.

During the night shift, each NICU room has to be operated by only one nurse, which makes it difficult for them to take good care of the infants.

Managing 35 infants at the same time involves their cleanliness, checking oxygen levels, ensuring proper phototherapy, monitoring adequate heating, and recording all activities in the register, including the time and details of care.

Additionally, the nurse has to brief the next shift nurse about all details in the morning.

After Bhanupriya's workload confessions, several questions arose regarding the feasibility of handling such duties and responsibilities alone.
