Despite months of preparation, Starlink’s rollout in India continues to be delayed as regulatory approval is still pending
Digital Desk: Elon Musk’s satellite communications company, Starlink, created a buzz in India yesterday after unexpected pricing details briefly appeared on its website. The page claimed that Starlink’s monthly internet plan would cost ₹8,600, along with a one-time hardware fee of ₹34,000. The figures immediately triggered widespread discussion among users eager for satellite internet services in remote areas.
However, Starlink has now clarified that the pricing information was not real. The company explained that the numbers were merely dummy test data that became visible due to a technical glitch. Starlink reiterated that it has not yet announced any service plans for India and will only do so after receiving the necessary government approvals.
Addressing the confusion, Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Starlink Business Operations, posted on X to confirm that the website accidentally displayed placeholder data due to a configuration error. She stated that the Starlink India website is not yet live, pricing for Indian customers has not been finalized, and the company is not accepting orders. Dreyer added that the glitch was quickly fixed and emphasized the company’s commitment to bringing high-speed satellite internet to India once all regulatory permissions are in place.
The incident has further increased public anticipation for Starlink’s entry into the Indian market. Although the mistaken pricing figures have now been dismissed, the curiosity surrounding the company’s actual plans remains strong. Many users are hopeful that Starlink will soon offer reliable connectivity in areas where traditional networks are limited.
Despite months of preparation, Starlink’s rollout in India continues to be delayed as regulatory approval is still pending. The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) recently reaffirmed its earlier recommendations on satcom spectrum fees, rejecting proposed changes by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). With approvals still in the final stages, India’s wait for Starlink’s official launch continues.
