Digital Desk: Tension escalated along the Assam-Meghalaya border as forest department officials from Assam faced attacks while attempting to drive away a herd of wild elephants.
Individuals from Meghalaya reportedly targeted the officials, and even journalists covering the incident were not spared, with stones hurled at their vehicles.
The conflict arose after a large herd of wild elephants took shelter near Tikir Para village in Lakhipur, Goalpara.
For over a month, the elephants had wreaked havoc in the area, consuming green paddy crops and leaving fields barren.
In response to repeated pleas from local villagers, the Lakhipur Regional Forest Department intensified efforts to drive the herd back to the hills.
During the operation last night, tensions flared as people from Meghalaya reacted aggressively, attacking forest officials and obstructing their efforts.
The situation has further strained relations between two neighboring states.
