Assam Forest Department personnel attempted to intervene and stop the unauthorized gathering, which led to heightened tensions
Digital Desk: A violent clash broke out in the Garbhanga forest area along the Assam-Meghalaya border after locals from Meghalaya allegedly attacked Assam forest officials. Several officers, such as the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) of Lakhra and the Ranger Sangita Singh, sustained injuries during the incident.
The conflict is rooted in a long-standing border dispute between the two northeastern states. The recent flash point came when officials and locals of Meghalaya, along with their Chief Executive Member (CEM) conducted a meeting within Assam’s territory without seeking prior approval.
Assam Forest Department personnel attempted to intervene and stop the unauthorized gathering, which led to heightened tensions. During the process of enforcement, a citizen of Meghalaya, namely Nareswar Timung, was arrested and sent to the Lakhra Forest Office and was held under custody.
Following the detention, a group of locals, allegedly supported by miscreants, stormed the forest office. In the confrontation, a number of forest personnel were beaten up.
The incident has once again brought to light the fragile situation along the Assam-Meghalaya border. Although police have now been deployed to curb the situation, law enforcers are yet to receive an official report.
Security has been tightened in the region to prevent further escalation.
