The protesters stated that the decision to intensify their movement was taken after repeated attempts to resolve the matter through peaceful demonstrations
Digital Desk: The Stakeholders of Tezpur University, including the Tezpur University Teachers’ Association (TUTA), the Tezpur University Non-Teaching Employees’ Association (TUNTEA), and members of the student community, began a 24-hour hunger strike on Sunday to protest unresolved administrative issues at the institution. The hunger strike, scheduled from 12:00 midnight to 11:59 pm, marks 100 days of sustained agitation by the university community.
The protesters stated that the decision to intensify their movement was taken after repeated attempts to resolve the matter through peaceful demonstrations, submission of memoranda, official inquiries, and formal appeals failed to elicit any meaningful response from the authorities. According to them, the continued silence has deepened frustration among stakeholders and exposed a serious lack of accountability within the administrative system.
A major point of contention during the protest is the prolonged absence of Vice-Chancellor Shambhu Nath Singh. The stakeholders alleged that his continued absence, coupled with the inaction of higher authorities, has led to what they described as administrative breakdown at the university. They claimed that this situation has severely affected academic functioning, lowered employee morale, and compromised student welfare. Additionally, they warned that the ongoing crisis has significantly eroded public confidence in the university’s governance.
The hunger strike, the protesters said, is intended to draw national attention to a wider governance crisis, where those in positions of power are allegedly protected while institutional integrity and democratic voices are sidelined. They emphasized that the issue extends beyond Tezpur University and raises serious concerns about the credibility of public institutions and the moral responsibility of the governing system.
Reaffirming their determination, the stakeholders said they would continue their movement until justice is ensured. They asserted that neither fatigue nor the passage of time would weaken their demand for accountability, transparency, and proper governance, and urged the authorities to intervene urgently in the interest of the university and its future.
