Guwahati: The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has reported the death of 32 doctors in Assam alone fighting the Covid-19 pandemic till date. As per the latest Covid registry statistics compiled by the IMA, around 20 doctors died in the first wave of Covid pandemic till December last year while 12 others died in 2021 in their fight against the virus.
The statistics further highlights the total number of doctor deaths across the country in both the first and second waves. A total of 1,594 doctors lost their lives in India, in the last two years.

As many as 757 doctors from 28 states lost their lives during the first wave followed by the death of 837 doctors in the second wave till date.
States like Maharashtra and Kerala where the prevalence of the Delta Plus variant of Covid-19 is on a rise also reported deaths of doctors in double digits. Maharashtra reported 23 doctor deaths and Kerala reported 24 deaths.
As per the IMA statistics, in the state-wise doctors martyrs list, Bihar saw the maximum number doctor casualties of 155 followed by Tamil Nadu (154), Delhi, (150) and West Bengal (14).
Meanwhile, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra and Kerala, have accounted for the major chunk of Covid-19 cases in India, as well as doctor deaths.
As many as 145 doctors have died due to the virus in Uttar Pradesh, in both the waves followed by 99 in Maharashtra and 29 in Kerala.
Speaking to a national daily, Dr Jayesh M Lele, IMA secretary-general said that frontline workers have sacrificed their lives while serving the people.
“However, maximum doctors lost their lives in the second wave which was more severe. Being the frontline warriors, we lost many of our doctors in spite of taking many precautions,” Dr. Lele further stated.
During both the waves, the angels in white – doctors and healthcare workers have been working day in and day out, in extremely stressful condition, and fought a valiant war as they did this time against an invisible enemy – the Covid virus.
Healthcare workers have been fearlessly working 24*7 for the last one-and-half year, without any rest or concern for themselves, just to make sure that the society is safe. Not only has there been immense stress and hardship for them but their families too have gone through a harrowing time.
